Why is prayer so Important?
When you look in the bible one of the most powerful weapons we have is prayer. Some might say why is prayer so important and here’s my answer. Imagine a situation in which one of your children is shipping out to the middle East to help fight in the war. There is nothing you can do to stop this from taking place. What about a tornado going through a town where your parent stay and you are hundreds of miles away. Or what about your spouse is having major surgery with a 50 percent chance of survival. In each situation you are helpless to change the course of events unfolding before you. What do can you do? What should you do? The answer is pray, because prayer can go where we can’t and do what we can’t. Prayer goes to our Father in heaven that He may intervene in a mighty way. This important to remember not only in our times of trouble but also in other areas. Staying before the Lord in prayer should be a part of our everyday walk especially in marriage.
Do You Pray for your Spouse?
In marriage I’ve learned one thing for sure and that is you can’t make someone change. We can talk with our spouse about certain issues but we can’t actually make them do better. This is where the power of prayer comes in to change things for the better. The only one who can bring about a change is God. That’s why I stay before him praying for my wife, my marriage and myself. I know everything is not her fault so I pray for myself as well. I want to make sure I’m doing what I need to be doing on my end to keep things on track. If there are things coming between us and I feel she is not seeing them I ask God to reveal them to her. I would hope she is doing the same for me, because it shows we want to on one accord.
We need to Pray together
This may seem like a simple task to some but for some this is hard, but not for the reasons you might think. Some people are not good at praying aloud with someone. Other times people may not know what to say and just feel a lot of pressure to perform. As long as it’s not an unwilling spirit holding you back you can figure something out. You may have it where one prays but you’re doing it together. We need to do this for a couple of reasons one is it includes God in our process. With God in the middle bonding you together it’s hard for the enemy to have space to push you apart. The second one is it communicates to your spouse you want your marriage to be strong. When ever you work with your spouse to better things or grow it’s a win for you both.
Take Away
Over the years, I’ve always heard people say, “A family that prays together stays together.” What does that mean? It means that those who keep God in the midst of their lives will stay together. Every time I see a Christian couple get divorced it hurts me, because somewhere in their marriage they forgot to hold on to God and His principles for marriage. In my marriage there have been times where things were getting ugly and one of us will say to the other we need to pray. At that point and time we stopped and came together because we know we needed God to turn things around. When we did that we have never walked away angry or continuing to argue. Our hearts were turned towards God and each other and it made a world of difference. There are nothing but benefits from prayer, so I encourage you to make sure you pray together and for each other. Prayer shows love, humility and being on one accord. Most importantly it brings God in to help preserve your legacy.
